Ctrl + ]

Increases the text size by 1 point. If held down, the font size will rapidly increase.

Cmd + ]

Ctrl + [

Decreases the text size by 1 point. If held down, the font size will rapidly decrease.

Cmd + [

Ctrl + Shift + >

Increases the text size by next preset value (for example, 12 to 14, 14 to 16, etc.).

Decreases the text size by next preset value (for example, 12 to 11, 11 to 10, etc.).

Let’s practice changing the font size using the shortcut keys below.

Shortcut Key Practice: Changing the Text Font Size

Select the entire document using Ctrl + A (Mac users: Cmd + A).

Let’s start by changing the font point size 1 point at a time. To increase the font size by 1 point, press Ctrl + ] once. Notice that the font point size increased from 12 to 13. (If your font shows a different value, that’s OK; this just means Word is set up on your computer to begin at a different font size when the document is first opened.)

Increase the font size point to 20 by pressing the shortcut key Ctrl + ] multiple times (holding down the keys will also work, but beware, the font increases quickly!).

Let’s bring the font point size back down to 12. Press Ctrl + [ multiple times (or hold it down) until 12-point font is shown in the font group (). (If you go below 12-point by accident, simply press Ctrl + ] as needed to return to 12.)

Finally, let’s practice increasing and decreasing the font size using the other two shortcut keys shown in the table. With the text selected (Ctrl + A), press Ctrl + Shift + > five times. As you press the shortcut key, notice how the point size increases by the preset levels in the box, rather than by a constant 1 point at a time. After pressing this command five times, you should now be at 22 (assuming you started at 12 point). Press Ctrl + Shift + < (5 times) to return to the original 12 point font size.
